Oaxacan Indigo Work-Shirt (NATURAL DYE)
This long sleeve work-shirt is made from a 7 oz Indigo dyed fabric hand-woven on a pedal loom by Familia Bautista Martinez in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca.
Indigo, or añil, grows along the coast of Oaxaca in a small town called Niltepec which is dedicated to cultivating it. The communities pick the wild plant, chop it, and put it in a fermentation bath where it transforms into a thick paste that is dried and pulverized into a fine powder. The family we work with in Teotitlan del Valle will fill a bath with lukewarm water and let the dye soak for about a day before putting the fabrics in. Once the fabric goes into the bath it will become a green color which means the process is working properly. This is because there is no oxygen in the water, once the fabric is taken out of the water and hung, it’ll slowly start becoming blue as it oxidizes.
